ALTAVISTA, VA / CAMPBELL COUNTY, VA — The music education community across Central Virginia is grieving the sudden and unexpected passing of Russ Pawlas, a longtime and deeply respected band director whose influence spanned more than three decades. Pawlas, who served as band director at Brookville Middle School and previously at E.C. Glass High School and Altavista Combined School, is being remembered as a gifted educator, a devoted mentor, and a man who changed countless lives through music.
News of his passing has left former students, colleagues, and friends devastated, many expressing shock and heartbreak at the loss of a teacher who was “one of a kind” and whose passion for music shaped generations of young musicians.
Pawlas was known not only for his musical expertise but for the compassion, humor, and encouragement he brought to every rehearsal. Former students describe him as a teacher who saw potential before they saw it in themselves, someone who opened doors, built confidence, and inspired a lifelong love of music. “He wasn’t just my band director,” one former student shared. “He was the person who recruited me to play drums and set me on the path I’m still walking today.
